Upcoming Compact SUVs From Maruti, Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra, Kia & Volkswagen: What’s Next For India
The sub-four-metre SUV scene in India is set for a major shake up between now and 2027. With brands like Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Hyundai, Mahindra, Kia and Volkswagen all prepping new contenders – powered by petrol, hybrid and electric setups – the competition is about to get even fiercer. Here’s a detailed look at the 10 new compact SUVs on the horizon:
1. Hyundai Compact EV:

Hyundai’s upcoming compact electric SUV will be built locally and sit below the Creta EV in the lineup. The EV will be offered with two battery choices and will lock horns with the Tata Punch EV and Nexon EV. Expect styling heavily inspired by the global Inster with Hyundai likely targeting a launch sometime in 2026.
2. Tata Scarlet:

Tata Motors is reportedly preparing a brand-new compact SUV nameplate called the Scarlet to expand its already strong presence in the segment. Drawing influence from the soon-launching Sierra’s in a sub-4m form, the Scarlet will likely share its mechanicals with the Nexon lineup.
3 & 4. Tata Punch Facelift & Next-Gen Nexon:

The Punch facelift has already been spotted multiple times ahead of a market debut in the near future. It will bring refreshed styling and new features. Meanwhile, Tata’s third-generation Nexon, internally known as Garud, is said to be in early stages of development. Scheduled for 2027, it will use a re-engineered version of the X1 platform.
5. Maruti Suzuki Micro SUV:

Maruti Suzuki is reportedly developing a new micro SUV to take on the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter. The yet-unnamed model could use a strong hybrid powertrain built in-house – helping it deliver high fuel efficiency of probably over 30 kmpl. Launch timelines aren’t clear yet but it’s expected to arrive after 2026.
6. Kia Syros EV:

The Kia Syros is expected to evolve into an all-electric SUV by 2026. Likely offered with two battery packs, the EV version may offer a real-world range of more than 400 km. The rest of the package including design and cabin equipment will remain consistent with the internal-combustion version.
7, 8 & 9. Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, Vision X & Vision S:

Mahindra revealed four new concepts built on the upcoming NU_IQ electric architecture in August 2025. Among them, the Vision S – a smaller take on the Scorpio – could arrive first, followed by the Vision X which could be aimed at compact crossover buyers. Meanwhile, the XUV 3XO-based EV is already testing and is expected to hit showrooms next year.
10. Volkswagen Tera:

Volkswagen’s upcoming compact SUV for India will likely be called the Tera (not to be confused with Nissan Terra). Sharing its internals with the Skoda Kylaq, it will be based on the localised MQB A0 IN platform. Power will come from a 1.0-litre turbo three-pot petrol engine mated to manual and automatic options.
