Auto brands like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra and Kia are reaping benefits of being present in popular compact and midsize SUV categories
Last month once again reaffirmed India’s growing obsession with SUVs as 16 of the top 25 best-selling cars belonged to this body style. The trend that began a few years ago has now become the new normal as SUVs dominate not just the premium and midsize spaces but also the compact category. With festive demand in full swing, the month brought impressive year-on-year gains for several models.
The Tata Nexon finished as the most sold PV in India as well as the SUV with 22,083 units. The model’s 50 per cent growth over October last year proves its dominance further. Mahindra’s strong performance was driven by its SUV-heavy lineup – led by the Scorpio range with 18,107 units with a 14 per cent rise year-on-year. The XUV 3XO and Thar further added to Mahindra’s tally with the former posting 12,237 units and the latter 12,029 units.
Together, they helped Mahindra maintain its strong foothold in the top 25 chart with five SUVs contributing to its volumes. Hyundai, meanwhile, continued to perform consistently in the SUV space with the Creta and Venue. The Creta sold 18,381 units, retaining its crown in the midsize SUV category. The Venue remains one of the top choices for compact SUV buyers with 11,738 units. The arrival of the new generation Venue should help increase the sales tally further.

With a starting price of Rs. 7.89 lakh (ex-showroom, introductory), the new Venue gets bigger in size and is packed with more features and technologies. The design takes plenty of inspiration from the existing Creta while the powertrain range has gained a six-speed automatic transmission, paired with the 1.5L CRDi diesel engine.
Maruti Suzuki’s presence was equally significant with models like the Fronx, Brezza and Grand Vitara. The Fronx clocked 17,003 units, showing consistent growth while the Brezza recorded 12,072 units despite a 27 per cent dip. The Grand Vitara, on the other hand, posted 10,409 units. Even the Ertiga, technically an MPV, continued to outsell several SUVs with 20,087 units.

Kia, too, held its ground with three entries in the list – the Sonet, Carens and Seltos. The Sonet achieved 12,745 units with a healthy 31 per cent growth while the Seltos sold 7,130 units and the Carens reached 8,779 units. Toyota’s two entries, the Hyryder and Innova Hycross, continued their run with 11,555 and 11,089 units respectively.
The Hyryder in particular posted an impressive 112 per cent year-on-year jump, thanks to strong hybrid sales and better availability. The sales figures in October 2025 clearly points the finger at SUVs becoming the heart of India’s automotive landscape and no wonder why manufacturers are pushing the limits to bring in new models fitting that category.
