From Mahindra to Volkswagen, five companies expected to launch new premium compact SUVs high on style, comfort, connectivity, safety, and performance

The Indian auto market has been seeing a huge influx of mid-size SUVs in recent months, and starting in late 2026, there will be a barrage of new compact SUV launches. Both domestic and overseas brands are planning a major product onslaught in this segment.

The first major compact SUV launch will be the second-gen Hyundai Bayon, expected to go on sale in the final quarter of this year. The current model is a Euro-focused SUV, but the next one will be designed keeping in mind India as well.

The next-gen Bayon will be positioned above the all-new Venue and be differentiated with a more dynamic design and more premium features. It will debut an all-new 1.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, but a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine option is also expected to be offered.

In early 2027, Mahindra will likely launch the production version of the Vision S concept. This model will look tougher and more authentic than most other compact SUVs on the market, and while it is expected to be more capable off the beaten path than the XUV 3XO, it won’t be a hardcore off-roader like the Thar. It will be the first model based on the company’s NU_IQ platform.

Tata Motors will likely launch the second-generation Nexon sometime in mid-2027. Codenamed ‘Tata Garud,’ this model will be based on a comprehensively upgraded version of the familiar X1 platform. Tata Motors is unlikely to offer it with a diesel engine like the current model. The company may launch it with petrol and petrol-CNG engine options and introduce a similar all-new Nexon.ev a month or two later.

Renault Bridger Concept

At the end of 2027, Renault will launch the production version of the Bridger concept. Based on a shortened version of the latest Duster’s platform, this model will compete directly with Mahindra Vision S concept’s production version. It will have a proper SUV look with a squarish exterior, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, and a high ground clearance of around 200 mm.

Renault has indicated that the interior will be impressive in terms of space, possibly with 200 mm of rear knee room and 400 litres of boot space. The company is likely to launch it with 1.2-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder and 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engines and introduce petrol-electric hybrid and pure electric variants at a later stage.

Also expected in late 2027 is a compact SUV from Volkswagen. It will be a corporate cousin of the Skoda Kylaq, but it may feature a slightly sportier exterior, possibly inspired by the Tera it launched in Latin America last year.

Based on the MQB A0 IN platform, Volkswagen’s compact SUV could be offered with features like 17-inch alloy wheels, an electric sunroof, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, and a wireless smartphone charger. A 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine could be standard, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard or a 6-speed automatic transmission as an option.
