Volkswagen Tayron will be a more premium and practical iteration of the global Tiguan and it will likely be powered by a 2.0L turbo petrol mill
Volkswagen is preparing to introduce the Tayron seven-seater SUV in India and early teasers suggest it will slot in as a larger and more premium offering. The model made its global appearance in late 2024 after being showcased in China and is essentially the three-row derivative of the latest global Tiguan that debuted internationally in 2023. In many overseas markets, the Tayron has stepped in as the direct successor to the Tiguan Allspace.
One of the Tayron’s biggest highlights lies in its size. At 4,770 mm long, it positions itself as a full-fledged family SUV. It is significantly longer than the European-spec Tiguan by 231 mm while also placing it just 108 mm shy of the flagship Touareg in overall length. The wheelbase has been extended to 2,791 mm, up by 110 mm, ensuring noticeably better cabin space, especially for second- and third-row occupants.
The stretched rear section adds visual heft too. In its seven-seat layout, the boot offers 345 litres of luggage capacity which expands dramatically to 885 litres when used as a five-seater with the third row folded. Internationally, the Tayron borrows its mechanical package from the Tiguan – giving buyers access to a wide range of powertrain options.

These include petrol and diesel engines along with mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid setups. Power outputs span from 148 hp on the lower end to 268 hp in the range-topping plug-in hybrid version. All variants are paired exclusively with dual-clutch automatic transmissions while the diesel models feature four-wheel drive as standard in global markets.
In terms of exterior design, the Tayron follows Volkswagen’s latest SUV design philosophy and closely resembles the China-spec Tayron L. Thanks to its larger footprint, it delivers a more commanding road presence than the Tiguan. Styling cues include sleek LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lights, an imposing grille, muscular bonnet lines, wide air intakes, smooth and uncluttered side panels, large alloy wheels and slim LED tail lamps connected by a light bar.

The R-Line version adds sportier bumpers and unique detailing for a more aggressive visual appeal. Globally, it is offered with a large 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster, three-zone automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, advanced driver assistance systems, Harman Kardon premium audio, illuminated interior elements and high-quality materials throughout the cabin.
For the Indian market, Volkswagen is likely to keep the engine lineup focused. The most probable choice is the familiar 2.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine borrowed from the Tiguan R-Line. This motor produces 204 hp and 320 Nm of torque and is paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Select trims could also feature Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. The Volkswagen Tayron will be brought to India as a CKD (completely knocked down) model and assembled locally at the company’s plant in Maharashtra.
