Toyota Land Cruiser FJ will go on sale globally by the middle of next year and is expected to launch in India by 2027
Toyota finally lifted the covers off the Land Cruiser FJ at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. The new FJ arrives as a spiritual successor to the iconic FJ40 but with a modern appeal and in a more accessible scale. The big question now is whether Toyota will bring this new baby Land Cruiser to India – a market that has recently shown strong appetite for lifestyle SUVs.
Right from the first glance, the FJ positions itself as a proper body-on-frame machine. Toyota has built it on an IMV platform which has already been extensively localised for Fortuner and Hilux – further fuelling its domestic arrival. It measures 4,575 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, 1,960 mm tall and carry a 2,580 mm wheelbase.
That wheelbase is notably shorter by around 270 mm compared to the Land Cruiser 250, giving the FJ a naturally tighter turning radius of 5.5 metres. It is expected to slot well below the Fortuner upon arrival likely in 2027 or a while later. Under the bonnet, Toyota has stuck to a proven workhorse instead of chasing turbocharged units.

The FJ uses the 2.7-litre 2TR-FE petrol engine mated to a 6-speed Super ECT automatic gearbox. Output figures hover around 163 PS and 246 Nm, not headline-grabbing numbers, but this motor’s reputation for durability is what matters here. Toyota wants the FJ to appeal to consumers who value reliability, practicality and go-anywhere capability.
The design is another area where Toyota has deliberately leaned into nostalgia. Chunky upright lines, a boxy greenhouse, circular elements on the face and a squared-off stance make the FJ instantly recognisable. More interestingly, it also gets removable bumpers for easy swapping or repairs, wide cladding, exposed hardware and plenty of scope for bolt-on accessories.

On the inside, Toyota has kept the cabin functional with wipe-clean materials and practicality which sticks by its positioning as an everyday usable 4×4. Toyota has already indicated that the FJ will go on sale in Japan around mid-2026. For India, Toyota hasn’t confirmed anything, but the brand’s intention to bring in over 15 new models including updates one on the back of record profits indicates that the FJ’s launch should be on the cards.
