Tata Motors explores new powertrain options for its premium SUVs, signalling a strategic shift from the originally planned ICE to EV transition

Alongside battery electric, Tata Motors is looking at alternative, eco-friendly powertrain options as part of its strategic measures to make its portfolio more eco-friendly. The company could expand CNG options to its premium models and also introduce a hybrid powertrain in the future.

Tata Motors already offers all its sub-4 metre cars—Tiago, Tigor, Punch, and Nexon—with CNG engines. The share of CNG models in its sales has been steadily growing over the recent years, going up from 3% in FY2022 to 8% in FY2023 to 16% in FY2024. In the first half of FY2025, CNG models contributed 21% to Tata Motors’ sales.

To drive further growth, Tata Motors is looking at introducing CNG engines in its larger models, which could potentially include the Curvv and Sierra. Shailesh Chandra, MG and CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, recently said that the company is looking at introducing CNG engines in the 4.3-metre segment, indirectly hinting at a Curvv iCNG and Sierra iCNG.

Chandra said that Tata Motors will roll out a CNG engine for its 4.3-metre models if it sees enough demand in the segment. Maruti Suzuki already offers the Victoris CNG and Grand Vitara CNG in this segment, and these models would directly compete with the potential Tata Sierra iCNG.

For even larger SUVs in the line-up, namely the Harrier and Safari, Tata Motors appears to be exploring a hybrid powertrain option as a bridge between ICE and EV. Chandra said that the company has the technology ready if that is what the market demands. The company could later bring the hybrid powertrain to even the Sierra. Competitors like Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, and Honda are already planning hybrid SUVs in this segment.

Chandra did not say, but recent developments indicate that Tata Motors’ hybrid powertrain will likely be based on its new 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which it will debut in naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions in the Sierra on 25th November. The turbocharged version is set to be introduced in the Harrier and Safari as well, on 9th December. Tata Motors has likely developed the new petrol engine to be suitable for hybrid applications.
