Second-generation Toyota Innova to bid farewell to the Indian market after a decade of sustained sales success next year

India, Indonesia, and the Philippines are among the last global markets where the Toyota Innova Crysta is still available and sold alongside the Toyota Innova Hycross. Media reports say that in India, 2026 will be the last full year of sales for the old model.

Introduced globally in 2015, the Toyota Innova Crysta is the second generation of the Innova series and turned ten last year. In India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) launched the Innova Crysta in 2016 and is set to pull the plug by early next year.

Originally, TKM used to offer the Innova Crysta with both petrol and diesel engines and manual and automatic transmissions. However, ahead of the arrival of the third-generation model, the Innova Hycross, it discontinued petrol engine and automatic transmission options. The company has been mainly catering to fleets with the Innova Crysta ever since, offering it with the 2GD-FTV 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine and a 5-speed manual transmission.

The 2GD-FTV 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine was initially compliant with BS-IV emission norms, and TKM later upgraded it to comply with BS-VI Phase-1 and BS-VI Phase-2 emission norms. The company is unlikely to develop it any further.

The Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) 3 norms set to come into effect in April 2027 are putting heavy pressure on automakers to significantly improve fuel economy and reduce CO2 emissions across their product line-ups. The Innova Crysta’s heavy ladder-frame construction and highly polluting diesel engine leave TKM with no viable option but to discontinue it by early 2027.

TKM earlier planned to phase out the Innova Crysta much earlier, but continued demand and supply chain issues with the components of the Innova Hycross prompted it to continue sales beyond that point. This time around, though, the discontinuation is certain.

The Innova Crysta’s prices start at 18,65,700 rupees (ex-showroom) and all the way up to 25,36,200 rupees (ex-showroom). The Innova Hycross costs 18,05,800-20,35,100 rupees (ex-showroom) in the petrol variant and 25,90,400-31,89,600 rupees (ex-showroom) in the hybrid variant. TKM may need to make the Innova Hycross hybrid more affordable when it discontinues the Innova Hycross to sustain demand.
