The new-gen Tata Harrier and Safari will be longer in length while underpinning an all-new platform with an AWD system
Tata Motors has commenced the work on the new-generation models of the Harrier and Safari SUVs while the market is still at least a couple of years away. Both the SUVs in their new generation will be sitting on an all-new platform which will be compatible with ICE and EV powertrains along with the AWD tech. For reference, the current-gen Harrier and Safari are underpinned by the Land Rover’s D8 platform. In addition, both the SUVs will be longer in dimensions as compared to the present models due to the new flexible platform.
The Land Rover-derived D8 architecture has a big drawback as it doesn’t support an AWD system with the ICE models. Hence, Tata had to heavily revamp this platform in order to present the Harrier EV with a QWD system. Also, the Safari has always been seen as a SUV with decent off-roading credentials. However, the current front-wheel-drive model, by no means, stays up to the original model’s off-roading prowess.
Hence, Tata Motors is developing a new platform for these SUV models so that it can offer an AWD system. It is being developed on similar lines as Mahindra’s NFA unit which is more than capable of accommodating ICE and electric powertrain options with a 4×4 drive system. The new-gen Harrier and Safari have been internally codenamed as Taurus and Leo, respectively.

It has also been learnt that the Harrier and Safari will have an extended length by 100-200 mm as compared to the ongoing models due to the use of this new platform. It will lead to an increase in the wheelbase, subsequently resulting in better cabin space predominantly in the seven-seater Safari. The Harrier too would be benefitted by the extension in length.
Tata Motors has joined hands with China-based Desay to develop the new-gen platform so that it can also install the latest version of the in-cabin infotainment system and autonomous tech in both the SUVs. The reports in the media also claim that a new electrical (E&E) architecture is also going to be a part of these SUVs.

Mechanically, both the new-gen SUVs will come with the all-new 1.5L direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine, which is expected to debut with the Sierra SUV later this year. The tried-and-trusted Fiat-sourced 2.0L diesel engine will also be on offer, albeit with a heavy upgrade to meet the CAFE 3 emission standards. The EV version of new-gen Harrier and Safari will be based on the present Harrier EV, though after a mid-cycle evolution.
