According to SIAM, total passenger vehicle dispatches climbed to 4,49,616 units in January 2026 with a 12.6 per cent rise
Maruti Suzuki continued to lead the domestic passenger vehicle space in January 2026 dispatching 2,36,962 units and registering an 11.6 per cent year-on-year gain. The company’s export performance was equally noteworthy, touching 51,020 units – its highest January overseas tally – while domestic PV sales stood at 1,74,529 unit sales with good performance in multiple segments.
Nevertheless, the prevailing market discourse reached far past the activities of a single firm. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), total passenger vehicle dispatches climbed to 4,49,616 units in January 2026 with a 12.6 per cent rise over the 3,99,386 units recorded in the same month last year.
These results show the peak of January performance in the history of the Indian automotive industry. Further down the rankings, Tata Motors delivered around 70,222 units – achieving its best January result to date and regaining the second spot supported largely by the continued popularity of the Nexon and Punch along with its electric offerings.

Mahindra & Mahindra posted a notable 25.37 per cent jump to 63,510 units – fuelled by sustained demand for its SUV portfolio. Hyundai Motor India followed with sales of 59,107 units with the Creta remaining a consistent volume contributor. Looking at the bigger picture, overall industry wholesales hovered around 4.55 lakh units during the month.
Both the two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments posted their best ever January figures with consistent demand across categories. At the same time, SUVs led the charge in the passenger vehicle space – aided by brisk retail activity and well-managed dealership inventories that helped sustain the growth momentum.

Policy measures outlined in the Union Budget 2026 looking to strengthen domestic manufacturing along with supportive tax structures and a continuous flow of new vehicle launches are being seen as key enablers of the sector’s upward trajectory. These factors are laying a firm groundwork for expansion in the coming months of the calendar year.
At the same time, the January 2026 performance demonstrates the resilience of the passenger vehicle market despite challenges such as fluctuating input costs and intermittent supply constraints.
