MG Starlight 560 to be one of the brand’s four new SUVs planned to be launched in India this year
JSW MG Motor has started testing its first all-new locally manufactured model since the launch of the MG Windsor in September 2024. Codenamed ‘MG 520,’ the upcoming model will be an SUV positioned above the MG Hector and be available in plug-in hybrid and pure electric variants.
The upcoming MG SUV will be a rebadged version of the Wuling Starlight 560. The name of the Indian model has yet to be announced, but for the time being, it’s being referred to as the MG Starlight 560.
The design of the test mule suggests it is the plug-in hybrid variant of the Starlight 560. The functional large grille with honeycomb inserts in the upper part of the front fascia is a clear giveaway of the partially electric powertrain here. The design of the rectangular headlamps also looks the same as that of the Starlight 560.

Internationally, the Starlight 560 is made in 5- and 7-seat versions, and JSW MG Motor may give both options in our market. It will likely be offered with features like full-LED headlamps and tail lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, a 360º camera system, Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems, and more.
The MG Starlight 560’s plug-in hybrid variant features a combination of a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a permanent magnet synchronous motor, both powering the front wheels. The petrol engine produces 78 kW (105 hp) and 130 Nm of torque, while the electric motor develops 145 kW (194 hp) and 230 Nm of torque. A 20.5 kWh LFP battery pack powers the latter and delivers an EV-mode range of 125 kilometres, as per CLTC. The plug-in hybrid variant achieves a top speed of 170 km/h.

The pure electric variant uses a different front-mounted electric motor, tuned to generate 100 kW (134 hp) and 200 Nm of torque. A 56.7 kWh LFP battery pack powers this motor and delivers a CTLC range of 500 kilometres. The pure electric variant can be driven at speeds of up to 160 km/h. The pure electric variant planned for India will likely have a punchier motor and a larger battery pack.
JSW MG Motor could launch the MG Starlight 560 in the fourth quarter of the year. The pure electric variant of the upcoming SUV could compete with the Tata Harrier.ev.
