The first SUV from JSW Motors is expected to be based on the Chery Jetour T2 and it could get a plug-in hybrid powertrain in India

JSW Motors has taken the wraps off a teaser for its maiden SUV for India. The model is expected to arrive around Diwali 2026 and will be assembled at the company’s plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. At the same time, JSW has begun appointing dealers across key cities – laying the foundation for a nationwide retail footprint.

Globally, the SUV it is based on – widely believed to be the Jetour T2 – is underpinned by Chery’s Kunlun monocoque platform. Measuring close to 4.8 metres in length including the rear-mounted spare wheel, over 2 metres in width and nearly 1.9 metres in height, it rides on a 2,800 mm wheelbase that supports generous cabin room.

Off-road credentials include 220 mm of ground clearance along with approach and departure angles of up to 39 degrees and 30 degrees respectively Powertrain options overseas are a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering upwards of 250 hp and nearly 390 Nm of torque – coupled with either a dual-clutch or conventional automatic gearbox.

An intelligent all-wheel-drive system supplied by BorgWarner is also offered internationally. For India, however, the focus is expected to centre on a 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid setup which enables an EV-only range of 139 km in the NEDC cycle. Step inside, a large 15.6-inch infotainment display dominates the dashboard. It is complemented by a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster.

Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor, the system supports wireless smartphone integration and rapid interface response. Premium cabin bits may include leatherette or suede upholstery, a large panoramic sunroof, multi-colour ambient lighting and a 12-speaker Sony audio arrangement.

The rear seats can be folded flat to create an extended storage or lounge-like space while boot capacity ranges from around 400 litres to 800 litres depending on configuration. Advanced driver assistance features are expected to include Level 2 systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane support and autonomous emergency braking along with a 540-degree camera that adds an underbody view to the standard surround display.

It boasts a squared-off design shaped under the guidance of former Porsche designer Hakan Saracoglu and could be positioned as a premium lifestyle-oriented SUV.
