The upcoming Land Rover Defender compact e-SUV will reportedly be based on the company’s dedicated Electrified Modular Architecture platform

Land Rover’s electric range will see a new addition to the Defender stable as a smaller SUV is expected to debut as early as next year according to international media reports. Designed to sit beneath the current Defender models, it is intended to consolidate the brand’s reach while retaining the toughness associated with the iconic nameplate.

The new SUV will reportedly be based on the company’s dedicated Electrified Modular Architecture platform which is prepared specifically for next generation EVs. A twin motor layout is likely – delivering standard all wheel drive capability. An advanced 800 volt electrical setup could support ultra fast charging speeds of up to 350 kW.

Battery packs are expected to be sourced from Tata’s forthcoming UK gigafactory while production could take place at Land Rover’s Merseyside plant. In terms of size, the compact Defender is projected to measure 4.6 metres in length, close to 2 metres in width and under 1.8 metres in height. These proportions should make it more manageable in urban settings.

Its electric drivetrain combined with off road credentials could make it particularly appealing to younger audiences looking for versatility and sustainability in one package. Styling is expected to echo the larger Defender models but in a scaled down form. Despite its smaller footprint, the SUV will likely carry forward the upright stance, squared silhouette and muscular wheel arches that define the Defender series for years.

Protective body cladding and signature LED lighting elements are also possible. On the inside, the cabin is set to take inspiration from Land Rover’s latest design language. Large digital screens, connected car technologies and advanced driver assistance systems are expected to feature prominently along with premium materials and detailing.

Looking at the competitive landscape, the upcoming electric Defender could rival compact luxury off road EVs including smaller derivatives of the G Class from Mercedes Benz. It may also be evaluated for markets such as India where the nameplate already enjoys tremendous success. But it will be interesting to see how the model will be positioned and whether local production will be considered or not.
