Hyundai is expected to introduce a heavily localised compact electric SUV this year in India while a host of hybrid offerings are arriving too

Well before its larger flagship ambitions materialise, Hyundai’s next big move in India could actually come from the mass segment. In 2026, the company is expected to introduce a heavily localised compact electric SUV. It will target affordable EV space rivals such as the Tata Punch EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, Citroen eC3 and MG Comet EV.

However, the key aspect of Hyundai’s mid-term plan likely revolves around hybrids rather than pure EVs. Over the next few years, multiple SUVs equipped with petrol-electric systems are likely to join the portfolio. At the premium end of the spectrum, Hyundai is studying the feasibility of launching the globally available Hyundai Palisade in India.

Though no official confirmation has been issued, the three-row SUV remains under evaluation. Internationally, the Palisade Hybrid combines a 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with electric assistance for improved frugality. If approved, it could arrive toward 2028 and become the most expensive and feature-rich Hyundai SUV in the country.

Closer to the heart of the market, Hyundai is engineering an all-new three-row midsize SUV internally referred to as Ni1i. It is expected to slot between the Hyundai Alcazar and the erstwhile Tucson. With a roomier cabin and a more premium positioning than the Alcazar, it may use a 1.5-litre petrol/hybrid engine and could debut around 2027.

The biggest volume driver, though, will remain the next generation of the Hyundai Creta. Known internally as SX3, the fourth-gen Creta is being developed on a new platform and will bring notable changes in design and interior. While existing petrol, turbo petrol and diesel engines may continue, the standout addition is expected to be a strong hybrid system that may find its way to the Ni1i as well.

While the compact zero-emission vehicle may address high volume segments, hybrids will bridge the transition from conventional engines and select premium imports could elevate brand perception in this particular space. Hyundai is also looking to bring in Bayon compact SUV along with updated Verna in the near future.
