Midsize SUVs are one of the highest-selling models in the Indian automobile industry. Several leading auto brands such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia and Honda has presence in this segment with products like Grand Vitara, Creta, Seltos and Elevate, respectively. These popular midsize SUVs are available in petrol, diesel and CNG fuel trims. Now, going a step ahead, the companies are planning to introduce strong hybrid versions of these models in the coming 9-12 months. In this piece, we will talk about the popular midsize SUVs getting hybrid engines in India.

1. New-Gen Kia Seltos

The South-Korean automaker will launch the new-gen Seltos in the first half of 2026 in India. It will debut the brand’s hybrid tech in the Indian market. The SUV, besides the cosmetic overhaul, will feature the strong hybrid powertrain setup with the naturally-aspirated 1.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine. Needless to state, the hybrid variants will return higher mileage as compared to their petrol-only counterparts. Though the hybrid tech could only be limited to the range-topping trims of the new-gen Seltos.

2. Honda Elevate

Honda Elevate was launched in Sep 2023 in the Indian market only with a 1.5L petrol engine. However, now it has been learnt that the Japanese automaker is keen on expanding the SUV line-up by introducing strong hybrid variants. Honda Elevate hybrid will debut in the second half of 2026, which is nearly one year away. It could borrow the City hybrid’s 1.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine with Atkinson hybrid tech setup. Though we need to wait for a few months for the company to release the official specs.

3. New-Gen Hyundai Creta

The new-gen Hyundai Creta will break cover in 2027 in the domestic market in India. It is touted as the first Hyundai model to feature the strong hybrid tech in the Indian market. Sources have revealed that the South-Korean automaker might pull the plug on the diesel engine of the SUV due to the stringent BS7 standards as it would cost a bomb in updating the existing powertrain to meet the new emission norms. As for the Creta hybrid, it will boast of the 1.5L petrol engine with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack.

4. Mahindra XEV 9e Hybrid

Mahindra is readying the hybrid version of the all-electric XEV 9e for the Indian market. Reportedly, the hybrid SUV will get the 1.2L 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor. Just so you know, the engine and electric motor can work in tandem as well as independently. The strong hybrid system will ensure a healthy fuel economy for the SUV.

The XEV 9e is underpinning Mahindra’s INGLO platform and in order to accommodate the 1.2L range extender hybrid setup, the company will make the requisite changes to the architecture. Though the exact launch timeline is not in public domain yet, we are likely to see the XEV 9e hybrid in the second half of 2027 in the Indian market.
