Kia Carens Clavis EV about to be launched in a taxi variant, marking the South Korean brand’s entry into India’s commercial vehicle market

Six years after arriving in India in 2019, Kia is finally looking at expanding its footprint beyond the traditional passenger car market. In addition to private customers, the company appears to be eyeing the commercial segment.

According to a leaked document published on Team-BHP, Kia plans to launch a taxi variant of the Carens EV in India. The company will offer it in a specially curated HTM grade, separate from the private registration variant’s HTK+, HTX, HTX ER, and HTX+ ER trims.

The HTM grade seems to have been derived from the HTK+ trim. Even though it’s meant for a taxi variant, it will come with 16-inch black-coloured alloy wheels, Star Map connected LED DRLs and tail lamps, and LED fog lamps. Kia will equip the Carens Clavis EV HTM with Ice Cube Multi Face Reflector-type LED headlamps, Active Air Flaps, a 25-litre frunk, and auto-folding ORVMs as well.

Inside, too, the Carens Clavis EV’s taxi variant will be generously loaded with essential and premium features. It will come with a 12.25-inch HD digital instrument cluster, a 12.25-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system, five USB Type-C ports, a six-speaker sound system, and a combination of fabric and semi-leatherette upholstery in a black and beige two-tone colour scheme.

Unlike the passenger variant of the Carens Clavis EV, the taxi variant will be equipped with a GPS tracker with six panic buttons and a speed limiter that cuts off acceleration at 80 km/h. It will also be devoid of a child lock system for passenger safety. Kia will offer it only with the lower-output motor that produces 133 hp and 255 Nm of torque, and the smaller NMC battery pack with a lower energy storage capacity of 42 kWh. The Carens Clavis EV taxi will deliver the same range as the regular model’s standard-range variant – 404 km.

Where the Kia Carens Clavis EV HTK+ retails at 17,99,000 rupees (ex-showroom), the Kia Carens Clavis EV HTM will cost 18,19,000 rupees (ex-showroom). With the entire feature list, full specifications, and retail pricing already out, we expect the market launch to take place very soon.
