Here we take a closer look at the 5 new 7-seater hybrid SUVs from brands like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota, Renault and Nissan

The SUV race shows no signs of slowing and automakers appear to be doubling down with new strategies to lure in buyers. A recurring theme is beginning to surface across the upcoming crop of launches – an increasing transformation towards hybrid power. Gaps in charging infrastructure and the lingering concern over range continue to hold back widespread EV adoption, leaving space for hybrids to bridge the divide.

With more manufacturers now looking to insert hybrid options across various price bands, the segment’s next set of launches could determine which formats resonate most with buyers. A look at the hybrid SUVs lined up for launch offers a clearer picture of where the trend might head next:

1. Hyundai Ni1i Premium SUV:

Hyundai appears to be laying the groundwork for a new high-riding model, internally referred to as Ni1i, which may arrive by 2027 if development proceeds as planned. Positioned to bridge the gap between the Alcazar and the Tucson, it is expected to carry a more upmarket flavour. Powertrain speculation points to a hybridised version of the brand’s familiar 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.

2&3. 7-Seater Renault Boreal & Nissan SUV:

Following the launch of its upcoming compact MPV – which is on track for a debut within the ongoing financial year – Nissan’s next major entry for India is set to be a midsize SUV. The new model will mark a crucial expansion for the brand’s local portfolio and is expected to go up against entrenched rivals in the midsize SUV space.

It will be followed by its three-row sibling which could closely resemble the recently unveiled global Renault Boreal. The Boreal is also expected to arrive in India within the next couple of years but it will be preceded by the next generation Duster with a potential hybrid powertrain.

The three-row versions of the Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder, which had been speculated earlier, could arrive in the coming years considering the good reception for seven-seaters derived from two-row midsize SUVs. If those extended formats eventually get the green light, they are expected to retain the existing hybrid powertrains.
