The fourth generation Hyundai Creta and a three-row premium SUV sitting below the Alcazar could get strong hybrid tech in India by 2027
The success of hybrids in the midsize SUV segment from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota has turned more manufacturers’ heads apparently. In the coming years, leading carmakers like Hyundai, Mahindra and Kia are expected to step into this space with hybrid offerings of their own and quite a few brands are also exploring the possibility.
The fourth-gen Hyundai Creta, tagged internally as SX3, is already said to be under development with a market arrival targeted in a couple of years’ time. The local production will continue at Hyundai’s Tamil Nadu base and although a sharper design and richer feature list are expected, existing engine and gearbox options may largely stay on.
One of the headline additions in the next generation Creta could be a strong hybrid petrol motor. Beyond this, Hyundai is also lining up a brand new premium SUV positioned between the Alcazar and Tucson within the lineup. The upcoming three-row model will more likely be manufactured out of Hyundai’s Talegaon plant purchased from General Motors.

Hyundai appears to be modelling its large SUV on the extended-wheelbase Tucson sold in China which measures about 4.68 metres in length. By doing so, the brand could create a more spacious alternative to the Alcazar in terms of cabin room. Plans are reportedly in place for a locally built strong hybrid system – pairing a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a larger battery pack.
Carrying the codename Ni1i, Hyundai’s upcoming SUV could be positioned against segment heavyweights such as the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus and Tata Safari and is expected to arrive in both six- and seven-seat formats. Buyers prioritising economy may find the addition of a strong hybrid setup particularly appealing.
