After skipping the current generation, the Honda CR-V is set to arrive back in Indian showrooms, and it will be positioned above the Elevate and the upcoming 0 Alpha
Honda never launched the current, sixth-generation CR-V in India, but it will bring the next, seventh-generation model to our market. Development is underway in Japan, where Honda recently demonstrated the next-generation mid-size platform that will underpin the model in a technology workshop.
The next-gen Honda CR-V’s platform will be significantly lighter than that of the current model. The upcoming SUV will share more than 60% of its parts with its platform-mates, which will include the next-gen Honda Civic and next-gen Honda Accord.
Along with a new platform, the Honda CR-V will adopt a new hybrid system in the next generation, and the reason we’re talking about this is that it is headed to our market. It will have a new 2.0-liter direct-injection petrol engine paired with a new, rare-earth-free traction motor and a new generator motor. The high-voltage battery pack will also be a new unit.

While Honda offers a mechanical all-wheel drive option in the current CR-V Hybrid, in the next-gen model, it will give an electric all-wheel drive option, with a second traction motor powering the rear wheels. The company has said the new setup will allow it to reduce the size of the center tunnel, improving space and comfort for rear-seat passengers. The new platform and powertrain are expected to make the CR-V Hybrid up to 90 kg lighter in the next generation.
Honda is developing a larger touchscreen infotainment system to replace its current 9-inch unit and will likely offer it in the next-gen CR-V. The new system is expected to measure around 15 inches diagonally, providing much bigger digital real estate. Another major change on the electronics front is likely to be a steering column-mounted gear shifter, which would free up space in the center console.

The next-gen Honda CR-V is likely to break cover in 2027 and could arrive in India in the same year. It will compete with the VW Tayron and Skoda Kodiaq, but it is unlikely to feature three-row seating. Seeing how overpricing the fifth-gen CR-V and tenth-gen Civic led to poor consumer response, one can only hope Honda prices the next-gen CR-V rationally.
Honda first introduced the CR-V in India in 2003, during the model’s second generation, and sold it through to the fifth generation until 2020. The company had to discontinue the global SUV as it was closing the factory where it used to assemble the model, located in Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh). Assembling it at the only remaining operational plant, located in Tapukara (Rajasthan), was not feasible. The localisation plan for the next-gen CR-V remains to be seen.
