New-gen Toyota Hilux is expected to launch in India with the same design and interior revisions in the near future

Toyota has officially taken the wraps off the ninth generation Hilux – a major leap forward for the popular pickup. For the first time in its history, the Hilux family welcomes electrified powertrains: a battery electric version and even a hydrogen fuel cell variant set to debut in 2028 alongside the familiar 48V hybrid.

The new Hilux will be launched first in its battery powered guise from December 2025 globally. The Japanese manufacturer has confirmed that the electric model features a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery paired with front and rear eAxles – delivering permanent all-wheel drive and a combined torque output exceeding 470 Nm.

Despite being electric, the truck retains its signature body-on-frame construction and off-road credentials such as a wading depth equal to the diesel-spec Hilux. It is claimed to have a driving range of 240 km in the WLTP cycle and a payload of 715 kg. Complementing the EV is the Hilux 48V hybrid version which is scheduled for production in spring 2026.

It combines Toyota’s proven 2.8-litre diesel engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The compact hybrid battery is tucked under the rear seats – ensuring no compromise on interior space according to the brand. It boasts a payload capacity of up to one tonne and towing capability of 3,500 kg. In Eastern European markets, Toyota will continue to offer traditional internal combustion powertrains.

The 2.8-litre diesel replaces the smaller 2.4-litre unit while the 2.7-litre petrol engine remains an option for regions that prioritise affordability and ease of serviceability over electrification and we expect the powertrain and transmission option in India to remain the same upon its market arrival in the near future.

As for the design, the new Hilux adopts a “Tough and Agile” theme inspired by the latest Land Cruiser. A muscular stance, slimmer headlights, and a modern front fascia are some of the highlights. The cabin, now available exclusively in a Double Cab layout, receives a complete overhaul with premium materials, a horizontal dashboard layout and dual 12.3-inch digital displays for instrumentation and infotainment.

Toyota has also introduced conveniences like a wireless charger, rear USB ports and remote connectivity through the MyToyota app – allowing fleet managers to monitor vehicle health and location data. Another big upgrade is the debut of electric power steering – a first for Hilux – to enable easier low-speed manoeuvrability and improved control over rough terrain.

The pickup also benefits from the latest Toyota T-Mate safety suite which now includes Proactive Driving Assist, Low Speed Acceleration Suppression, Emergency Driving Stop System, and over-the-air software updates. Looking ahead, Toyota confirmed that a hydrogen fuel cell Hilux is on track for production by 2028 as the new-gen has all the bells and whistles to replicate the success of its predecessors worldwide.
