Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company together accounted for nearly three-quarters of all motorcycles shipped overseas in 2025
The motorcycle industry saw overseas shipments climbing to an unprecedented 4.3 million units in the recently concluded CY. Compared to the previous year, the numbers represent a massive 27 per cent jump while also standing almost 40 per cent higher than the pre-pandemic high of 3.1 million units achieved back in 2019 in the local market.
The road to this milestone has not been linear. Exports grew consistently in the years leading up to the pandemic – rising from 2.3 million units in 2017 to 3.1 million units by 2019. The disruption caused by COVID-19 in 2020 led to a temporary decline but the recovery that followed was extremely quick. By 2021, volumes had already moved past earlier peaks.
The momentum continued and culminated in the strongest performance seen so far in 2025. A major factor behind this surge has been demand from international markets. Latin America has emerged as a particularly strong region with countries such as Colombia and Brazil contributing large volumes. African markets, especially Nigeria, have also played a critical role while parts of Asia including Nepal and the Philippines have remained consistent importers of Indian motorcycles.

Leading exporters have widened their product range to better adhere with regional requirements while improved logistics and easier access to foreign currency in several markets have further supported export growth. India’s manufacturing scale and cost advantages combined with an established global distribution network can be cited as key structural factors.
The export landscape continues to be dominated by two players. Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company together accounted for nearly three-quarters of all motorcycles shipped overseas in 2025. Bajaj Auto led with a 43 per cent share, exporting close to 1.9 million units, up from 1.6 million units a year earlier. TVS Motor followed with a 29 per cent share – recording exports of around 1.3 million units – a substantial rise from 0.9 million units in 2024.

More interestingly, the success due to exports contrasts with domestic volume sales. Motorcycle sales within India have yet to reclaim their earlier highs and we expect the numbers to move up in the right direction as multiple new models are waiting to launch across different segments and price brackets targetting a wide variety of consumers.
