BYD finished 2025 with approximately 4.6 million vehicles sold worldwide; the huge volume tally elevated it to sixth place among the world’s largest automakers

International expansion played a decisive role in BYD’s record-setting year. Nearly a quarter of its total 2025 deliveries came from overseas markets with more than one million vehicles exported. Manufacturing footprints in Brazil, Thailand and Hungary have consolidated its reach across South America, Southeast Asia and Europe – allowing the company to localise production.

In China, BYD continued to command significant market share as local brands gained dominance in the passenger vehicle space. Against this backdrop, BYD closed 2025 with approximately 4.6 million vehicles sold worldwide. It was enough to move it ahead of Ford which reported 4.4 million units for the same period following a slight annual dip.

The huge volume tally elevated BYD to sixth place among the world’s largest automakers. The most symbolic victory, however, came in the electric vehicle arena. BYD delivered around 2.25 million battery electric cars during the year – surpassing Tesla by a margin of around 600,000 units. The result crowned BYD as the world’s best-selling EV brand for 2025.

The main factor behind the sales surge has been its vertically integrated structure. BYD produces its own batteries and key components giving it more control over supply chains and production costs. Since discontinuing pure internal combustion engine vehicles in 2022, the company has focused exclusively on battery electric and plug-in hybrid technologies.

Meanwhile, Tesla navigated a more complex environment in the US and other international markets. Competitive intensity increased across major markets and ever-changing policy frameworks have affected electric vehicle incentives influenced buying patterns. These challenges contributed to comparatively softer momentum for the American EV pioneer.

Electrification has moved away from being a niche growth area to the primary battleground for global leadership and BYD’s ascent shows the accelerating influence of Chinese manufacturers. The brand is looking to expand its presence in India as well as the addition of new models to its lineup can be expected in the near future.
