All-new Blade battery and flash charger to make EVs the new normal, especially in China, where both technologies are now available in the market

BYD has introduced the second generation of its popular Blade LFP battery technology and a flash charger, aiming to make its electric cars nearly as practical as ICE models. The company has started commercialising these technologies in China.

The second-generation Blade battery is the culmination of six years of R&D and offers a 5% improvement in energy density over the original version. It generates less heat, dissipates heat more uniformly, and brings a 2.5% improvement in capacity retention.

BYD has started using the all-new Blade battery in several cars in China, one of which is the Denza Z9 GT, in which the latest technology delivers a stunning range of 1,036 kilometres. The main talking point of the second-generation version is its significantly more advanced charging capability, as it works hand in glove with BYD’s all-new flash charger.

BYD Flash Charger

The Chinese automaker has developed the all-new flash charger with two charging guns, each of which can dispense up to a whopping 1.5 megawatt (1,500 kW). This is the world’s fastest charger, capable of charging an EV from 10% to 70% SoC in just five minutes and from 10% to 97% in just 9 minutes. Even at a freezing temperature like -30ºC, it can charge an EV from 20% to 97% in just 12 minutes.

BYD’s flash charger is the world’s first rail-mounted suspended T-type charger. The cable supports the connector, making it feel extremely light and easy to use. It remains suspended at all times, meaning there’s no issue of tangling. This charger also has a plug-and-charge feature, which enables automatic vehicle authentication and billing, making the charging experience seamless.

BYD plans to set up 20,000 flash-charging stations in China by the end of 2026. The company will offer this technology within a 3 km radius in Tier-I and Tier-II cities, within a 5 km radius in Tier-III and Tier-IV cities, and within a 6 km radius in Tier-V and Tier-VI cities. 2,000 of these flash-charging stations will be located along highways, covering nearly one-third of highway service areas.

This means there would be a flash-charging station roughly every 100 km along these routes, making inter-city and inter-state journeys stress-free. BYD has pledged to open half of these highway sites by the first week of May.
