In the retail car sales charts for September 2025, Maruti Suzuki regained the top position while Tata Motors moved up to second ahead of Mahindra and Hyundai

The passenger car market in September 2025 witnessed a big shuffle in rankings as Tata Motors overtook Mahindra & Mahindra to attain the second position according to Vahan data. Maruti Suzuki, the country’s leading carmaker, retained its wide lead, but the company’s registrations slipped.

It reported 1,22,785 units in September compared to 1,30,242 units in August with a MoM volume decline of 5.77 per cent. Even with the dip, Maruti’s dominance across hatchbacks, SUVs, and MPVs ensured it remained far ahead of its rivals. Tata Motors clocked 40,068 passenger vehicle registrations in September – up from 37,988 units in August.

The numbers resulted in a 5.44 per cent month-on-month rise which is good enough to push it into the second spot as demand for its key models such as the Nexon and Punch persisted. Mahindra, which had been comfortably positioned in second place earlier, saw a reversal of fortunes.

Registrations fell to 37,451 units in September from 42,253 units a month earlier. The drop of 11.37 per cent pushed the brand down to third position. While SUVs remain Mahindra’s backbone, uneven supplies and widely experienced logistical hurdles should have impacted its monthly tally.

Hyundai Motor India faced the biggest drop among the top players. Its registrations tumbled by 22.34 per cent – dropping to 35,470 units in September from 45,686 units in August. Despite relying heavily on SUVs such as the Creta and Venue, Hyundai’s volumes took a notable hit – leaving it trailing both Tata and Mahindra in the rankings.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor also struggled to maintain momentum. The company’s September registrations stood at 20,051 units – compared with 26,453 units the previous month. The fall of 24.23 per cent came despite recent price benefits from GST reforms and steady demand for models like the Innova Hycross and Fortuner.

Kia India too recorded a decline with 16,540 units in September versus 18,793 units in August. These Vahan registration numbers are in contrary to the dispatch data provided by individual manufacturers.
