Mahindra & Mahindra and JSW MG Motor were the companies with the most significant growth in electric car sales in 2025
As choices grow and charging infrastructure expands, electric car sales are picking up steam in India. New data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) has revealed that the emerging segment recorded a 77.04% growth last year.
1,76,817 electric cars were sold in India last year, 76,942 more than in the preceding year (99,875 units). What’s more interesting is that their contribution to total car sales is also rising. From 2.4% in 2024, the share of electric models in total car sales rose to 4.0% last year. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles continued to be the top-selling electric car company in India last year, but it lost a significant market share to MG and Mahindra. The homegrown automaker sold 70,004 electric cars, marking a 13.28% Y-o-Y growth.
JSW MG Motor, on the other hand, delivered 51,387 electric cars, recording an impressive 135.57% Y-o-Y growth. The company’s EV success is strongly centred around the MG Windsor EV, which became India’s highest-selling electric car in 2025, the first full year of commercial availability for the model.

Mahindra & Mahindra performed even more impressively last year on the EV front. While it sold only 33,513 electric cars, that volume marked a whopping 369.44% Y-o-Y growth. The majority of this volume was contributed by the BE 6 and XEV 9e, the deliveries of which began in March.
Hyundai Motor India launched its first locally manufactured EV last year – the Creta Electric, and this helped it record a 635.89% Y-o-Y growth in EV sales. Its sales volume was still quite low, though – 6,726 units. It’s clearly evident that the Creta Electric has not been received well by the market.

Kia India’s first locally manufactured electric car – the Carens Clavis EV, has also received a lukewarm response. Between the India-made electric MPV and the imported new EV6 and EV9, it managed to sell just 2,730 electric cars last year, recording a 557.83% year-over-year growth. Citroen saw a 54.75% Y-o-Y decline in EV sales in India last year. The company offers only one electric model in our market – e-C3, which registered just 871 units in sales.
Most companies dealing in imported electric cars, including models locally assembled from knocked-down kits, saw a surge in sales last year. New entrant VinFast and Tesla have been off to a slow start, having sold only 871 units and 225 units, respectively.
