Standalone JSW brand to operate independent of the JSW MG Motor, the partnership with China’s SAIC Motor that sells MG cars in India

JSW Group’s new auto entity, JSW Motors Limited, has aggressive plans for the first phase of its operations. The company plans to launch two cars in the next 12 months and is aiming for high localisation right from the beginning.

Adopting a top-down strategy, JSW Motors Limited will introduce a Toyota Fortuner rival with plug-in hybrid technology as its first model. This SUV will be a rebadged version of Chinese auto giant Chery’s Jetour T2 plug-in hybrid, and in addition to a different name, it will carry a few design tweaks as well, Parth Jindal, the Managing Director at JSW Cement and JSW Paints revealed during a recent interview with CNBC TV-18.

JSW Motors Limited is building a factory in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, and Jindal said that the general assembly line there will be ready by June. The plant will feature a paint shop as well, which will be ready by October, and the plug-in hybrid SUV will be 80% localised by that month.

Everything other than the cells, from the battery pack to the steel for the body-in-white, motor, seats, tyres, and glass, will be sourced locally, Jindal said. JSW Motors Limited is in advanced talks to localise even the cells. The company expects to start the production of the first model by August and launch it by September.

The Jetour T2 plug-in hybrid is available in three different configurations, with a pure electric range of 100 kilometres in the base variant, 162 kilometres in the middle variant, and 160 kilometres in the top variant, all as per WLTC. JSW Motors Limited may bring the base variant to India, and it is said to price its rebadged model at around 45 lakh rupees.

The second JSW car in India will be priced much lower, although it will still be quite expensive for the average Indian. Jindal did not reveal whether the second car will be a plug-in hybrid or a pure electric model, but did say that the company plans to launch it in January 2027 and price it between 15 and 30 lakh rupees. There’s a strong chance this car will also be a rebadged and mildly redesigned version of a Chery model, quite possibly a BEV.
