Across the industry, small car dispatches climbed by around 23 per cent following the GST 2.0 tax change but its long time impact has to be waited and seen

After spending much of the past few years on the sidelines, the hatchback category in India began showing renewed momentum toward the end of 2025. A decisive change in taxation played a central role in this turnaround, easing mounting prices on smaller cars and pulling budget-conscious buyers back into showrooms as it used to be.

The turning point came in late September when GST on small cars was lowered from 28 per cent to 18 per cent. The revision, effective from 22 September 2025, translated into tangible price reductions across high volume models including the Maruti Suzuki Alto and WagonR, Tata Altroz and Tiago, Toyota Glanza, Hyundai i10, Renault Kwid and Hyundai i20 amongst others.

Within weeks, the impact became visible in sales data with sequential volumes for compact cars rising close to 20 per cent. Across the industry, small car dispatches climbed by around 23 per cent following the tax change. The resurgence began to show up in market share figures as well. During the October–December 2025 period, hatchbacks accounted for 24.4 per cent of passenger vehicle sales – improving from 23.5 per cent recorded across the first nine months of the year.

While still well below the segment’s pre-Covid dominance when hatchbacks contributed nearly half of all PV sales, the late year improvement suggested a major change in affordability-driven demand. That said, cumulative volumes for the full calendar year remained broadly in line with 2024 levels as the segment’s recovery is still at an early stage.

Maruti Suzuki emerged as the biggest beneficiary of this change. Its entry-level and compact models such as the Alto, S-Presso, Celerio and Wagon R witnessed a steep 91.8 per cent year-on-year surge in December 2025 alone. Demand rose fast enough to push waiting periods to nearly six weeks in some markets – prompting production adjustments.

Following the GST revision, Maruti’s entry segment volumes expanded by 31 per cent – comfortably ahead of the industry average – while the share of first-time car buyers increased by about 5 per cent. Tata Motors, for instance, expects moderate growth of around 18–20 per cent in its hatchback portfolio during the second half of FY2026.

But, does not foresee a major improvement in overall segment share. The sustained popularity of compact and midsize SUVs continues to limit the ceiling for hatchback expansion. From the industry’s perspective, the regulatory-led price decline has helped restore price balance in the small car space.
