Hyundai Nexo Euro NCAP

Hyundai is actively studying the feasibility of launching FCEV tech in India and thus the Nexo could arrive in the near future

Hyundai’s hydrogen-powered Nexo has achieved a significant milestone in Europe earning the highest possible five-star rating under the latest Euro NCAP safety protocols. At a time when fuel-cell vehicles still occupy a niche space, the result sends and message that alternative propulsion does not come at the cost of occupant protection or real-world safety performance.

The achievement places the Nexo firmly within Hyundai’s growing list of top-rated vehicles in independent crash testing. Models such as the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 9 have already set a benchmark for the brand’s electric portfolio and the Nexo now extends that safety consistency into the hydrogen segment.

Euro NCAP’s evaluation framework covers four key areas: protection for adult occupants, child safety, driver-assistance systems and safeguards for vulnerable road users. The Nexo delivered balanced results across all categories – recording 90 per cent for adult occupant protection and 85 per cent for child occupant protection. These figures place it among the stronger performers in the large SUV class.

Structural integrity played a major role in the score. During frontal impact tests, the cabin remained intact with effective energy absorption limiting injury risks to critical body regions for both front occupants. Full-width barrier testing further demonstrated consistent restraint performance while side-impact assessments yielded particularly strong outcomes including top scores in lateral collision scenarios.

Both front and rear seats offered effective whiplash mitigation, helping reduce neck injury risks in low- and medium-speed impacts. Far-side protection was also enhanced through the use of a centre airbag which limits occupant movement during secondary collisions. Child occupant safety proved to be one of the Nexo’s strong areas.

Crash tests involving six- and ten-year-old dummies showed strong protection across the head, chest and abdomen in both frontal and side impacts. The system for disabling the front passenger airbag was clearly indicated, and compatibility with approved child restraint systems was confirmed across seating positions. Euro NCAP also acknowledged the Nexo’s post-impact and assistance technologies.

Features such as the automatic emergency call system measures to reduce secondary collisions after an initial impact and verified door and window operation in water submersion scenarios all contributed to the final rating.
