Hyundai’s electrification efforts in India won’t be limited to just pure electric cars, with hybrids serving as a bridge between ICE and BEVs

As part of plans to invest 45,000 crores by March 2030, Hyundai has confirmed it will bring hybrid cars to India. These electrified models would be part of the 26 launches it has lined up for our market.

Hyundai has been making hybrid cars since 2009, but it has entirely avoided bringing them to India so far. Now, it has announced not one but eight hybrid cars for our market, spread across various segments and scheduled for launch by March 2030. The company has yet to announce the details of these models, but we already have a fair idea of the line-up.

While most automakers follow a top-down approach when it comes to introducing hybrid cars, Hyundai appears to have a rather aggressive plan. Media reports suggest the company will directly start offering the technology in locally manufactured models, possibly based on an all-new 1.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and starting with the next-gen Bayon (codename: BC4i) that will compete with the Maruti Fronx.

It would not be hard to imagine the i20 also adopting the same all-new hybrid system as the next-gen Bayon when it moves into its fourth generation. The next-gen i20 is expected to hit European showrooms in 2026, but India will likely have to wait until 2027 for this model. The second-gen Venue, scheduled to be launched next month, may adopt the same hybrid powertrain with its facelift later this decade.

Hyundai would need a different, more powerful hybrid system in larger models, such as the next-gen Creta (SX3) due in 2027 and the Alcazar successor, possibly the larger XUV700 rival codenamed ‘Ni1i’ that will follow later. The company could adapt its existing 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine for this application.

Upcoming Hyundai hybrid Cars

Hyundai has also confirmed plans to launch an MPV and an off-road SUV, and it’s safe to assume it would offer the larger electrified powertrain in these models as well. The eighth hybrid model for India could be the second-generation Palisade, rumoured to arrive in India in 2028.

Already on sale globally, the latest Palisade debuts an all-new hybrid system that combines a 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 258 hp and 353 Nm of torque with an electric motor that generates 72 hp and 264 Nm of torque. This combination provides 329 hp of total power and 460 Nm of total torque and delivers a range of 1,015 km, which, given the 72-litre capacity of the vehicle’s fuel tank, translates to a fuel economy of 14.1 km/l.
