Kawasaki W230 uses a 233 cc air-cooled, single-cylinder engine with a SOHC layout producing around 17.5 hp and 18.6 Nm of peak torque

Kawasaki India has dropped a rather interesting teaser on its official social media channels, officially marking 60 years of the iconic W-series. Keen-eyed enthusiasts quickly noticed that the spotlight was firmly on the W230 in the teaser which hints at its impending arrival in the Indian market but the official confirmation has not been made yet.

The teaser video makes it clear that Kawasaki is evaluating the W230 for India and the move feels well-timed. At present, the brand lacks a fierce contender in the entry-level modern-retro motorcycle space. While the W175 has only been received modestly, the arrival of the W230 could spice things up if priced well as it has the backing, at least on paper.

Globally sold as a lightweight modern classic, the Kawasaki W230 is designed to be an accessible alternative to larger retro machines such as the Royal Enfield Classic 350 and in India, it could take on the likes of RE Hunter 350, TVS Ronin, Honda CB 350 and entry-level Yezdis and Jawas. Its focus is on simplicity, manageable performance and old-school styling which should make it appeal to both new riders and aficionados.

Powering the W230 is a 233 cc air-cooled, single-cylinder engine with a SOHC layout and two valves. An engine balancer is used to keep vibrations in check. Output figures stand at around 17.5 hp at 7,000 rpm while peak torque is rated at 18.6 Nm at 5,800 rpm. The motor is paired with a six-speed gearbox and Kawasaki’s Positive Neutral Finder which makes finding neutral easier when stationary.

Fuelling duties are handled by digital fuel injection using a 32 mm throttle body. The motorcycle is built around a tubular semi-double cradle steel frame and boasts a low kerb weight at 143 kg with the dry figure hovering close to 133 kg. Accessibility is further enhanced by a low 745 mm seat height, 150 mm of ground clearance and a 12-litre fuel tank.

Suspension duties are managed by a 37 mm telescopic fork at the front and twin rear shock absorbers with five-step preload adjustability. Braking hardware includes a 265 mm front disc and a 220 mm rear disc – supported by a dual-channel ABS system as standard. The W230 rolls on wire-spoke wheels wrapped in an 18-inch front and 17-inch rear tyre setup.

Design inspiration comes straight from the classic 1965 Kawasaki 650-W1, visible in elements such as the teardrop fuel tank, chrome-finished fenders and peashooter-style exhaust. A round LED headlamp, dual analogue dials with a small LCD inset and minimal electronics complete the old-school vibe.
