Land Rover Baby Defender will be underpinned by the modular EMA platform and it will likely be introduced in 2027 globally
The Land Rover Defender’s roots can be traced back to the Land Rover Series introduced in 1948. Originally identified by wheelbase lengths such as 90, 110 and 127, it officially adopted the Defender name in 1990 to set it apart from the Discovery. The Defender remained in production for decades with periodic updates until it was discontinued in January 2016.
The latest generation officially entered markets in 2020 carrying forward the iconic nameplate and now the nameplate will target more volume sales courtesy of the Baby Defender. It is being readied as a compact luxury SUV with a market launch set for 2027. Often referred to as the Defender Sport, it will take shape as the smallest member of the Defender family.
However, it will retain the rugged stance that defines the nameplate alongside being high on modern technologies and features. The SUV will be underpinned by Land Rover’s EMA platform and offered as a fully electric vehicle. Expected dimensions stand at around 4.6 metres in length, 2 metres in width and less than 1.8 metres in height – positioning it below the standard Defender in size.

Early spy images reveal a boxy silhouette with an upright profile and signature LED lighting elements that mirror its larger sibling. The EMA architecture will more likely support dual electric motor configurations delivering all-wheel drive capability. It will also accommodate an 800V electrical architecture that enables rapid charging speeds of up to 350 kW.
Battery supply for the model will likely be sourced from Tata’s upcoming gigafactory in the United Kingdom. Final assembly is scheduled to take place at Land Rover’s Merseyside facility to ensure that the Baby Defender remains closely tied to the brand’s British manufacturing base. With its compact proportions and electric drivetrain, the Baby Defender could appeal to younger buyers.

To be positioned as the entry point into the Defender lineup, it will help widen Land Rover’s reach within the luxury EV space. Upon arrival, the Baby Defender will compete directly against the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz “Little G” electric SUV which is also set to arrive in 2027. Both models will represent downsized yet premium alternatives in the growing compact electric off-roader category.
