Maruti Suzuki shows the highest-ever rail-based vehicle movement and represents an 18 per cent increase compared to CY 2024
Maruti Suzuki India Limited has achieved a major milestone in sustainable logistics by dispatching over 5.85 lakh vehicles through Indian Railways in calendar year 2025. It shows the highest-ever rail-based vehicle movement by the company and represents an 18 per cent increase compared to CY 2024.
A look at the data highlights how dramatically rail dispatches have grown over the past decade. In CY 2016, Maruti Suzuki transported only around 77,000 vehicles via rail – accounting for just 5.1 per cent of its total dispatches. Fast forward to CY 2025 and that figure has surged more than 7.5 times with rail now contributing approximately 26 per cent of overall vehicle transportation.
The growth curve has been particularly steep since 2021. Rail dispatch volumes rose from 2.22 lakh units in CY 2021 to 3.20 lakh units in 2022 followed by 4.22 lakh units in 2023 and 4.96 lakh units in 2024 – before crossing the 5.85 lakh mark in 2025. The climb mirrors Maruti Suzuki’s expanding production scale and its increasing reliance on rail as a dependable logistics backbone.

The environmental benefits have been substantial. During CY 2025 alone, Maruti Suzuki avoided 87,904 metric tonnes of CO2e emissions and saved over 687 lakh litres (68.7 million litres) of fuel by opting for rail transport. The savings directly contribute to lower carbon emissions, reduced fuel consumption and easing congestion on India’s road network.
Maruti Suzuki’s rail-first approach is not new. The company became India’s first automaker to receive an Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) licence in 2013 – giving it early control over rail-based logistics. Since FY 2014–15, the company has transported more than 28 lakh vehicles by rail, servicing over 600 cities across 22 dispatch hubs using a hub-and-spoke distribution model.

Currently, Maruti Suzuki operates over 45 flexi-deck rakes – each capable of carrying around 260 vehicles per trip, enabling high-capacity and efficient movement. In CY 2025, 53 per cent of total rail dispatches originated from in-plant railway sidings at the Gujarat and Manesar facilities. Commenting on the new achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said,
“The year 2025 marks our highest-ever rail dispatch, with over 5.85 lakh units. During the year, we strengthened our green logistic efforts through two landmark events– the inauguration of India’s largest automobile in-plant railway siding at our Manesar facility, and second was we dispatched vehicles by rail to Kashmir valley through the world’s highest railway arch bridge over Chenab river, a first by any automobile manufacturer.”
