Maruti Suzuki appears to be developing a host of eco-friendly options as a slew of new hybrid and zero-emission models are waiting in the pipeline

Maruti Suzuki is reworking its small car playbook for the next phase of its mass market strategy. Instead of relying only on facelifts and sticker jobs, the brand is now stitching hybrids and electrics deep into its future lineup. Multiple compact projects are already reportedly under development, covering crossover, hatchback and MPV segments.

One of the first models expected to be spawned is the updated Fronx. The crossover is believed to adopt technical updates in line with the global model. Thus, more advanced features like ADAS making its way into the feature list is high. In the early phase, it may borrow a global mild-hybrid setup before moving to an in-house strong hybrid system currently being developed by Maruti Suzuki.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the company is cooking up an all-new entry-level car to recapture first-time buyers. It is expected to prioritise running costs and fuel flexibility. Reports suggest that it could be offered with multiple options including CNG, flex-fuel and hybrid assistance which could make it one of Maruti Suzuki’s most versatile budget offerings in years.

Alongside, a new compact MPV is said to be under evaluation. Expected to slot below the Ertiga, it may take inspiration from Suzuki’s tall and compact Spacia MPV sold in Japan. A strong hybrid petrol setup will more likely be part of the powertrain strategy. There looks to be momentum building around a new micro SUV for the Indian market too.

Positioned to take on the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter amongst others, it could feature an SUV-inspired design and hybrid technology. On the electric front, Maruti Suzuki could bring in a compact EV based on the eWX concept. The production model is expected to retain its boxy stance – prioritising interior room and city drivability.

Further up the ladder, the new generation Baleno is reportedly being worked on for a launch timeline of 2027. Apart from a new design and more premium interior, it is expected to get Maruti Suzuki’s strong hybrid petrol setup yet, utilising the Z-series 1.2L NA three-cylinder petrol engine as part of a range extender setup.
