Chery iCar V23 could be badged as an MG upon arrival in the near future; delivers a CLTC range between 301 km and 501 km per charge

A heavily camouflaged compact electric SUV from MG Motor has been spied testing near the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) facility – sparking speculation about its India launch. The boxy silhouette, upright windshield and flat bonnet strongly hint at a G-Wagon-inspired design – giving it a proper off-roader stance despite its compact footprint. With testing underway on Indian soil, an official debut could happen sooner than expected.

The prototype appears tall and wide, measuring around 4,220 mm in length, 1,915 mm in width and 1,845 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,735 mm. These proportions give it a planted and muscular look while the interior will be roomy despite a compact footprint. Ground clearance is rated between 200 mm and 212 mm while its impressive off-road geometry includes an approach angle of 43 degrees and a departure angle of 40–41 degrees.

Buyers may get 19-inch or 21-inch alloy wheels. Under the skin, the SUV is expected to offer multiple powertrain choices. The RWD variant of the Chery iCar V23 produces 136 hp and 180 Nm while the AWD version develops up to 211 hp and 292 Nm. Performance figures are respectable with 0–100 kmph coming up in 11 seconds for RWD and 7.5 seconds for the AWD version. Its top speed is electronically limited to 140 kmph for most trims.

Globally, higher-performance variants producing up to 449 hp are also available. Internationally, it is offered with 47.28 kWh, 59.93 kWh (LFP) and 81.76 kWh (NMC) packs – delivering a CLTC range between 301 km and 501 km. Some versions use 50.6–69.8 kWh CATL LFP batteries and larger trims get 80–81.7 kWh CATL NMC units. DC fast charging from 30 per cent to 80 per cent takes around 30 minutes.

Elsewhere, the lifestyle-oriented SUV boasts a premium cabin that could rival the upcoming Mahindra Thar EV. A large 15.4-inch 2.5K touchscreen powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip dominates the dashboard. Key features include Level 2++ ADAS, adaptive cruise control, a 540-degree transparent chassis camera, automatic parking and ventilated seats.

Practicality is well addressed with 234 litres of boot space which is expandable to 744 litres too. Interestingly, instead of a spare wheel, it gets a modular “backpack” external storage box. The SUV also supports 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load functionality enabling users to power external appliances.
