Customers demanding AWD capability in the Tata Harrier.ev flagship SUV considerably higher than Tata Motors anticipated at launch in July
The Tata Harrier.ev is seeing a surprisingly high demand in the AWD configuration, and Tata Motors will be quick to respond. The company plans to introduce lower-priced AWD configurations soon to capitalise on the new opportunity.
Tata Motors used to offer the Hexa with a 4WD system, but ever since it discontinued the body-on-frame model in 2020, its entire line-up has been FWD-only. The Harrier.ev with an available e-AWD system is its first model in years that can cater to customers who enjoy off-roading or need more traction in slippery conditions, such as snowy or wet roads.
During a recent interaction with Autocar India, Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said that 30% of Harrier.ev customers have purchased it in the AWD configuration. The demand is 10% higher than the company expected, and it will introduce more affordable AWD configurations for further growth.

The Tata Harrier.ev AWD features an induction motor at the front and a permanent magnet synchronous motor at the rear, and motive power comes from the latter. The front motor generates 116 kW (156 hp) and 164 Nm of torque and the rear motor develops 175 kW (235 hp) and 304 Nm of torque. A boost function temporarily bumps the rear motor’s torque to 340 Nm. In total, there’s 291 kW (390 hp) of power and up to 504 Nm of torque available from this setup.
The driver can choose from six different Terrain Modes: Normal, Snow/Grass, Mud-Ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl, and Custom. An off-road assist function allows the driver to fix a speed of 1-5 km/h and focus only on manoeuvring. A transparent mode shows what’s beneath the vehicle, helping them avoid any obstacles and safely navigate through the trail. Tata Motors says the Harrier.ev AWD can climb grades of up to 47%.

Currently, the Tata Harrier.ev is available in AWD only in the top-end Empowered trim, featuring the extended-range 75 kWh LFP battery pack. Officially, this configuration delivers a range of 622 km, but Tata Motors expects it to cover a distance of 460-490 km in real-world conditions. It retails at 28.99 lakh rupees (ex-showroom).
