Over the coming years, Tata’s new manufacturing site in Tamil Nadu will play a key role in supplying vehicles for Indian as well as international markets

Operations have officially begun at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ new manufacturing site in Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu. The greenfield facility, located in Ranipet district, has started production with the Range Rover Evoque which becomes the first Jaguar Land Rover model to be locally manufactured at this plant.

While the Evoque indicates the starting point, the Panapakkam site has been conceived as a future-ready manufacturing hub. Built to support next-gen vehicle programmes, the facility is engineered to accommodate internal combustion, hybrid and electric powertrains across both Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and JLR portfolios.

Over the coming years, it will play a key role in supplying vehicles for Indian as well as international markets. The plant was formally inaugurated in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran along with senior leaders from Tata Motors, Jaguar Land Rover and state government representatives.

A standout aspect of the Panapakkam facility is its emphasis on workforce development. Shopfloor operations are handled by technicians drawn from across Tamil Nadu – selected through a state-wide evaluation of polytechnic graduates. The employees are enrolled under Tata Motors’ Lakshya programme which follows an “earn while you learn” approach to nurture long-term manufacturing talent.

Before joining full-scale operations, the technicians underwent months of intensive training at Jaguar Land Rover facilities – gaining exposure to global manufacturing standards, quality systems and advanced processes. In addition, participants are offered the opportunity to pursue a company-sponsored B.Tech degree while remaining employed.

Production at the Panapakkam plant will be scaled up in phases. Tata Motors plans to progressively increase output over the next five to seven years – ultimately reaching an annual installed capacity of 250,000 vehicles. The company has earmarked an overall investment of nearly Rs. 9,000 crore for the facility which is expected to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Sustainability has been embedded into the plant’s design from the outset. The facility is designed to operate entirely on renewable energy, achieve water-positive status and adhere to stringent global environmental standards.
