Renault Bridger concept could give rise to a production compact lifestyle-oriented SUV that could bridge the gap between Kiger and new Duster

Renault has offered an early glimpse of a new concept called the Bridger which points the finger at the possibility of a smaller and more rugged sport utility vehicle for India. The first teaser image suggests a compact model positioned below the recently revealed India-spec Duster – potentially opening up an entirely new sub segment for the brand.

The Bridger study appears to target buyers drawn to compact lifestyle-based off roaders. If brought to production in a form close to the concept, it could challenge models such as the three door Thar and the Jimny while also keeping an eye on upcoming compact offerings like the Vision S based mini Scorpio N and the Kia Syros.

Its positioning could allow it to sit between the Kiger compact SUV and Duster midsize offering within Renault’s domestic lineup. Design cues visible in the teaser shows a distinctly upright stance. The silhouette reveals squared off front and rear sections, tall pillars and a nearly flat roof and bonnet layout. Chunky roof rails and a tailgate mounted spare wheel give it a retro appeal too.

Similar to the latest Duster, the production version may incorporate sharper detailing tailored specifically for Indian consumers. A major talking point will be drivetrain capability. To directly rival established off road focused nameplates, a capable four wheel drive system should be present. However, even the larger Duster, whose prices will be announced soon in India, does not feature an all wheel drive setup for India yet.

It remains to be seen whether Renault equips the compact SUV with genuine 4X4 hardware or positions it more as a style driven model with a classic flavour and a spacious cabin. Under the bonnet, the most probable engine option is the familiar 1.0-litre turbo petrol HR10 unit already seen in the Kiger. Transmission choices could include a manual gearbox as well as a continuously variable transmission.

The Renault Bridger concept is unlikely to reach showrooms immediately. The French auto major is expected to prioritise the launch of a three row Duster derivative scheduled for the next financial year. As a result, the compact lifestyle SUV may only materialise in the latter half of 2027.
