Competition within India’s mid-to-large motorcycle space have intensified notably in recent years with market share movements revealing how consumer tastes are changing. For instance, Royal Enfield expanded its presence in the from about 27 per cent earlier in the decade to around 32 per cent in the first nine months of the Financial Year 2025-26.

Meanwhile, TVS Motor also climbed from near 15 per cent to close to 19 per cent over the same comparison period. In contrast, Bajaj Auto saw its slice shrink significantly – sliding from 32 per cent to nearly 22 per cent. These changes are happening against the backdrop of a gradually expanding premium motorcycle landscape in the domestic market.

During the first ten months of FY26, motorcycles exceeding 125 cc displacement accounted for about 26 per cent of total industry volumes – the highest proportion recorded in more than five years. The consistent rise points towards riders increasingly prioritising capability, styling and brand appeal rather than seeking the most economical option.

Despite this upward trajectory, smaller machines still dominate overall volume sales. The entry-level motorcycles continue to command close to 73 per cent of the total market. However, the middleweight bracket between 150 cc and 350 cc is steadily carving out a larger share – moving from approximately 23 per cent last fiscal year to nearly one-quarter now.

The momentum can be attributed to tax adjustments introduced late last year as they helped reduce price burdens in certain categories. Lower effective costs combined with easier financing access have made it more feasible for customers to upgrade to motorcycles that once seemed financially out of reach.

In FY25, models above the 125 cc threshold represented about 24.4 per cent of all motorcycle dispatches nationwide. Socio-economic factors are also playing a significant role as increasing disposable income, growing enthusiasm for lifestyle-oriented products and exposure to premium products are encouraging riders to step up from basic transport tools to aspirational two-wheelers.

Taken everything into account, it is apparent that a structural transformation is underway in the motorcycle ecosystem. While the commuter segment remains the backbone of volume, the accelerating acceptance of higher capacity models shaped by governmental policies and other factors will influence product planning in the years ahead.
