The new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder direct-injection Hyperion turbo petrol engine is expected to develop 168 PS and 280 Nm
Following several speculations and development delays, Tata Motors is finally ready to unravel petrol power into its flagship SUV lineup. The Tata Harrier and Safari will debut their long-awaited turbo petrol engines on December 9, 2025. The new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder direct-injection unit belongs to Tata’s latest ‘Hyperion’ engine family.
It first turned heads at Auto Expo 2023 and since then, its market launch has been subjected to plenty of talks. The homegrown manufacturer looks to bridge the gap in its SUV portfolio to take the fight directly to brands like Mahindra, Hyundai and JSW MG Motor. The aforementioned powertrain will make its first public appearance under the bonnet of the Sierra in just under two weeks.
It will be followed by the rapid expansion into the lineups of the Harrier and Safari. The Hyperion Turbo GDI motor is expected to churn out around 168 PS maximum power at 5,000 rpm and 280 Nm of peak torque delivered between 2,000 rpm and 3,500 rpm. These figures put it in the same league as other modern turbo-petrol engines in the segment and it could offer a strong mid-range grunt.

Tata will more likely pair this motor with both manual and automatic transmission options. While the exact automatic gearbox remains under wraps, possibilities include a six-speed torque converter or a dual-clutch auto. The naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine, which will also feature in entry-level variants of the Sierra, will not be offered on the Harrier and Safari duo.
These SUVs will continue to appeal to consumers looking for more performance-based setups. In fact, Tata’s new turbo petrol mill has drawn attention beyond its own lineup as reports suggest Jeep is evaluating this same 1.5-litre engine for future updates of the Compass and Meridian. The existing 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine in the Harrier and Safari is borrowed from FCA.

Tata currently holds rights to modify this larger oil burner and whether the updated engine will be available by next month or not is yet unknown. As you might expect, pricing for the petrol variants will be slightly below their diesel counterparts.
