Tesla Model Y becomes more practical in India, now capable of travelling much longer distances and without getting more expensive
Tesla has silently rolled out a key upgrade for the Model Y in India just a month after commencing its deliveries on 5th September. The company has improved the EV’s range while keeping the price unchanged.
Of the two Model Y variants it offers in India — Standard Range RWD and Long Range RWD — Tesla has increased the top configuration’s range from 622 km to 661 km. The company quotes range figures in our market under the WLTP, which is a stricter and provides more realistic results than India’s MIDC. The upgraded Model Y Long Range RWD supports charging at up to 250 kW and adds up to 267 km of range in 15 minutes, just like the old model.
Originally, Tesla used to equip the Model Y with a 79 kWh battery pack. The company increased the range by 39 km by switching to an 84.2 kWh battery pack that consists of new LG-made cells with higher energy density and efficiency. It still uses the same motor that allows the EV to hit 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and achieve a top speed of 201 km/h.

Tesla has not rolled out any revisions for the Standard Range RWD of the Model Y in India. The base configuration delivers a range of 500 km, takes 5.9 seconds for a 0-100 km/h sprint, and maxes out at the same speed as the top configuration – 201 km/h. It is chargeable at up to 175 kW and adds up to 238 km in 15 minutes.
The Model Y retails at 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) in the Standard Range RWD variant and 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom) in the Long Range RWD variant. Tesla sells it through dealerships in Mumbai and Delhi, although it is also taking orders online through its website and delivering cars at home across India.
