In H1 2025, Maruti Suzuki sat on top of PV sales table while Mahindra moved up to second ahead of Tata and Hyundai
In the first six months of 2025, India’s passenger vehicle sector grew slightly. From January through June, cumulative industry dispatches stood at 21.89 lakh units with a modest growth of 1.3 per cent when compared to the same period in 2024. However, buried within that muted headline figure was a stark divergence in fortunes across manufacturers.
For Mahindra, the first half of the year marked a major step forward. It added over 50,000 units to its tally from last year, recording a total volume of 3.01 lakh units between January and June 2025. The twenty per cent growth propelled Mahindra ahead of both Hyundai and Tata, making it India’s second-largest PV manufacturer.
The domestic growth can be attributed to the good reception for recent launches such as Scorpio N, Thar Roxx and XUV 3XO. Maruti Suzuki remains the country’s largest PV brand by volume. However, its performance in the first half of the year showed signs of deceleration. With 8.78 lakh units dispatched, Maruti’s volumes declined by two per cent, down over 20,000 units compared to H1 2024. The drop reflects ongoing struggles in the hatchback and other entry-level segments.

Hyundai and Tata Motors followed similar trajectories – each posting an eight per cent year-on-year contraction in volume. For Hyundai, the slip meant a loss of nearly 24,000 units while Tata saw a drop of just over 23,000. Punch and Nexon – the cornerstones of Tata’s volume play – were unable to offset the fall. Toyota and Kia ended the first half of 2025 with healthy gains.
The Japanese manufacturer improved its numbers by fifteen per cent year-on-year – adding over 21,500 vehicles. Kia also moved upwards, recording a thirteen per cent rise in dispatches and closing the half-year at 1.42 lakh units. Škoda recorded the highest growth rate across all brands, posting a 134 per cent jump over H1 2024. Total volumes surged from just over 15,000 to more than 36,000 units.

MG, though still well under five per cent in market share, posted a seventeen per cent gain with dispatches inching past the 31,000 mark. Renault registered a sharp thirty-one per cent fall in volume – losing over 7,000 units. Nissan’s numbers also dropped twenty-two per cent while Citroën declined twenty-seven per cent and Jeep shrank by thirty per cent.
Honda, which ended the first half with just over 32,000 units, recorded a thirteen per cent drop. Volkswagen saw a minor slip of three per cent. Its first half dispatches were nearly flat at just under 19,000 units. In sum, the overall growth of 1.3 per cent at the industry level masked an increasingly bifurcated marketplace. However, a handful of brands – Mahindra, Toyota, Kia, Škoda and MG – showed strong gains.
