Domestic carmakers dominate the new car sales chart in India in January 2026, with Tata Motors in the top position with the Nexon
The Tata Nexon was India’s third-highest-selling car last year, and its popularity further grew last month. The sub-4 metre SUV went straight to no.1 on India’s new car sales chart. Tata Motors sold 23,365 units of the Nexon in January, and compared to the same month last year, this marked an increase of 7,968 units and 51.75%.
The compact SUV is available with multiple powertrain options, including petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric. India’s second-highest-selling car in January 2026 was the Tata Punch, which recorded 19,257 units in sales. Compared to January 2025, the Hyundai Exter rival’s sales grew by 3,026 units or 18.64%. Like the Nexon, it is available in petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric variants.
Ranking third on the new car sales chart last month was the Hyundai Creta, with 17,921 units sold. The mid-size SUV saw a year-on-year decline of 601 units or 3.24%. The Maruti Brezza was next on the sales chart, having registered 17,486 units, up 18.57% from January last year (14,747 units).

The Mahindra Scorpio family, which consists of the first-generation Classic and second-generation N models, ranked fifth on the January 2026 sales chart. Mahindra sold 15,542 units of the body-on-frame SUV last month, just 100 units or 0.65% higher than in January last year.
The sixth-highest selling car in India last month was the Maruti Victoris. Maruti Suzuki sold 15,240 units of the new mid-size SUV, which sits below the Grand Vitara. The seventh model on India’s top 10 sales chart was the Maruti Fronx, with 13,353 units sold. Compared to January 2025 (15,192 units), sales were 1,839 units or 12.11% lower.

The Hyundai Venue ranked eighth in the January 2026 new car sales chart. Thanks to the full redesign last year, the sub-4 metre SUV recorded a year-on-year growth of 11.77%, going up from 11,106 units in January 2025 to 12,413 units.
In the ninth position was the Mahindra Bolero, with 11,841 units sold. Compared to January 2025, sales were up by 3,159 more units or 36.39%. The Kia Sonet was India’s tenth-highest-selling car last month. The compact SUV saw sales of 10,998 units, 3,804 units more or 52.88% higher than in the same month last year.
