The Nexon helped Tata Motors to register its highest monthly sales tally in India as it finished ahead of Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Hyundai Creta
The car sales charts saw a major shake-up in September 2025 with Tata Motors stealing the limelight thanks to the Nexon’s record-breaking performance. The company’s consistent focus on expanding its EV and ICE portfolio has clearly started to pay off. The compact SUV emerged as the top-selling car in the country recording a total of 22,573 units – almost doubling its September 2024 numbers.
The 97 per cent year-on-year jump shows how Tata has managed to capture both mainstream and EV buyers with one nameplate. The SUV’s wide range of variants, features and high-standard build quality have helped it secure mass appeal. In fact, the Nexon’s rise directly contributed to Tata’s overall market share climbing from 11.4 to 15.8 per cent in just one year.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire followed closely with 20,038 units – up by 85 per cent on a year-on-year basis. The compact sedan’s healthy run exemplifies the sustained demand for affordable cars. While Maruti remains the country’s largest carmaker, its overall sales dropped by 8.4 per cent compared to last year.

Interestingly, despite five Maruti models featuring in the top 10, the company’s market share fell from 40.4 to 35.1 per cent. In third place stood Hyundai’s Creta, clocking 18,861 units with a 19 per cent jump from last year. The SUV continues to lead the midsize SUV class and remains Hyundai’s best-seller in the domestic market.
The Mahindra Scorpio range comprising the Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N followed with 18,372 units – registering 27 per cent year-on-year growth. The SUV maker recently introduced the updated 3-door Thar, Bolero and Bolero Neo and they will help garner more volume sales during this festive season as well.

At number five, the Tata Punch maintained its momentum with 15,891 units sold – up 16 per cent year-on-year. Close behind, Maruti’s Swift managed 15,547 units – slightly lower than last year’s 16,241. Rounding out the top ten were the Wagon R, Fronx, Baleno and Ertiga. However, the overarching story of September 2025 was Tata’s rise.
The festive period as well as the GST 2.0 tax benefits which lowered asking prices for models significantly could not have come at a better time. They will certainly provide the volume surge in the remaining months of this calendar year.
