In June 2025, Maruti Suzuki Swift finished on top of the hatchback sales table ahead of WagonR, Baleno, Tiago and Alto
The hatchback segment, long a cornerstone of the Indian passenger vehicle market in the past, showed more wear than resilience in June 2025. While volume leaders held on to familiar positions, the year-on-year comparisons reveal consistent declining signs in some of the biggest names in the auto industry.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift retained its place at the top but the numbers tell a different script. With 13,275 units dispatched in June, the model registered a 19 per cent drop from its June 2024 total. The WagonR, also from Maruti Suzuki’s long running hatchback stable, ended the month narrowly behind at 12,930 units which represented a 6 per cent decline year-on-year.
Further down, the Baleno’s sharp reversal stood out. The model, once a fixture among the top three, reported 8,966 units for June 2025 – down 40 per cent from the same period last year, the steepest slide in the list. Fourth spot went to Tata Motors’ Tiago. Unlike most of its peers, the small hatch saw an uptick in total domestic volumes.

The homegrown manufacturer recorded 6,032 units in June – a 17 per cent rise over last year’s 5,174. The tally placed it ahead of Maruti Suzuki Alto which, in contrary, dropped to fifth position with 5,045 units – registering a 35 per cent year-on-year drop. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios came in sixth – slipping 14 per cent to 4,237 units.
Tata’s Altroz followed with 3,974 units – just a one per cent gain over its performance a year ago. In eighth was the Hyundai i20, down 29 per cent from June 2024 to 3,785 units. The Toyota Glanza premium hatchback, also affected by the downturn, mirrored the i20’s fall rate with 2,938 units for the month in the domestic market.

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio, last on the list, ended at 2,038 units – a 32 per cent decline year-on-year. Even with five models in the top ten, Maruti Suzuki faced noticeable setbacks across the board. The company’s long dominant hatchback portfolio is contending with different buyer priorities and increased competition from feature loaded compact SUV alternatives.
