Toyota Urban Cruiser BEV Teased

Toyota Urban Cruiser BEV will be sold with two battery options and is based on the same platform as the soon-launching Maruti Suzuki e Vitara

Toyota has dropped the first teaser of the Urban Cruiser BEV for the Indian market. It will become Toyota’s first mass-market EV for India and is positioned below the bZ4X in the brand’s global electric portfolio. The Urban Cruiser BEV is closely related to the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara which is expected to launch soon in India.

The teaser reveals several notable visual details that differentiate the India-spec car from the international version. Up front, the SUV gets slim LED headlamps with LED DRLs but notably misses out on the full-width LED light bar that’s present on the global model. A BEV badge placed above the front fender marks the location of the charging port. From the side, the silhouette look nearly identical to the e Vitara.

For India, Toyota will leverage its partnership with Suzuki. The Urban Cruiser BEV will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility sharing the same Heartect e architecture as the e Vitara. The shared platform means both SUVs will use common components, systems and battery layouts – allowing Toyota to control costs and speed up its EV rollout.

With the e Vitara scheduled to go on sale soon, Toyota’s electric SUV is expected to follow within the next few weeks. Globally, the Urban Cruiser BEV is offered with two battery pack options – 49 kWh and 61.1 kWh. Power is supplied by a single electric motor producing 172 hp and 192 Nm of torque. These figures place it squarely in the midsize EV category and just as the e Vitara, it could get a range close to 550 km between charges.

Like modern Toyota EVs in the international markets, it may come equipped with the T Intouch connected technology suite enabling app-based access to vehicle data, charging status and remote functions. In terms of size, the electric SUV measures 4,285 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width and 1,640 mm in height supported by a 2,700 mm wheelbase. Toyota is expected to load the Urban Cruiser BEV with latest equipment and tech.
