Mahindra XUV 7OO and Tata Safari will meet several worthy competitors in the coming 12-15 months in the Indian market

The demand for full-sized SUVs is increasing day by day due to the practicality offered by them in terms of space and seating. Presently, the two most popular 7-seater SUV models on sale are Mahindra XUV 7OO and Tata Safari. However, in the coming 12-15 months, we will witness the launch of multiple new SUVs in this segment from leading brands such as Honda, Renault and Nissan. Hence, in this piece, we will talk about the upcoming 7-seater SUVs set to challenge the XUV 7OO and Safari in the Indian market.

1. New Honda 7-Seater SUV

The new Honda 7-seater SUV will be based on the newly-developed PF2 platform which will be compatible with petrol-only, strong-hybrid and all-electric powertrains. The three-row model would be an all-new SUV contrary to the reports that claimed it to be a stretched version of the Elevate. It will be locally developed at the brand’s Tapukara facility in Rajasthan.

The powertrain choices will include the naturally-aspirated 1.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine from City and Elevate while the Atkinson strong-hybrid unit is also likely to be available with the top-end variants. We have already seen the Atkinson cycle doing duties to the City e:HEV with twin electric motors alongside the petrol engine. It returns a mileage of 26.5 kmpl with the City e:HEV and we are likely to see similar figures with the new 7-seater SUV.

2. New Renault 7-Seater SUV

Renault will launch a new 7-seater SUV model by the end of 2026 in the Indian market. It is expected to be the 7-seater version of the Duster SUV, which is likely to launch in the first half of the next year in India. Tentatively titled as Boreal, it will share the platform, features and powertrains with the Duster.

Design-wise, the Renault 7-seater SUV will have its own identity while the cabin is expected to be more spacious due to the extended length. The company might equip it with additional features in order to present it as the flagship model in Renault’s portfolio in India. Besides the regular petrol engine, Renault Boreal 7-seater SUV might also get a strong-hybrid setup in the higher variants.

3. New Nissan 7-Seater SUV

Recently, Nissan India’s MD Saurabh Vatsa confirmed the launch of a D-segment premium SUV in early 2027 in the country. The three-row, seven-seater Nissan SUV will be based on the new mid-size SUV which will break cover on Oct 7, 2025. Identical to the Duster and Boreal arrangement, the mid-size (5-seater) and full-sized (7-seater) SUVs from Nissan will share several elements among themselves.

Mechanically, it will be offered with a petrol engine and hybrid tech. The SUV is likely to feature a 4×4 drive system in the range-topping variants.
