Toyota Land Cruiser FJ could be the name of the upcoming off-road SUV based on the IMV ladder-frame architecture
Toyota’s legendary Land Cruiser family could soon gain a smaller member in the form of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ. The upcoming SUV is expected to target buyers who want genuine off-road ability in a more compact package. Positioned well below the larger Toyota Fortuner, the model could act as an accessible entry point into Toyota’s SUV lineup if it eventually reaches more markets including India.
The SUV, in question, first appeared publicly during the Japan Mobility Show 2025 where Toyota showcased several concepts pointing toward its future product direction. Early indications suggest that the compact Land Cruiser could go on sale in Japan sometime around 2026. If international demand remains strong, other markets may follow later.
Toyota seems to be angling towards heritage cues inspired by the iconic Land Cruiser FJ40. The design is expected to feature an upright stance, simple surfaces and classic off-road proportions. Circular lighting elements, flat body panels and a squared silhouette are likely to give the SUV a traditional Land Cruiser personality.

Underneath the bodywork, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is believed to utilise the IMV ladder-frame architecture. The platform is already used in vehicles like the Hilux and the Fortuner. Such a construction method focuses on strength and durability, characteristics that are essential for serious off-road use and harsh environments.
In terms of mechanicals, the SUV is expected to use Toyota’s well-known 2.7-litre 2TR-FE petrol engine. This naturally aspirated unit produces around 163 PS and 246 Nm of torque. Power delivery could be handled by a 6-speed Super ECT automatic gearbox. One of the key highlights of the upcoming model could be its manageable size.

Reports indicate that the SUV could measure around 4,575 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width and 1,960 mm in height along with a 2,580 mm wheelbase. Compared with larger Land Cruiser models, the shorter footprint should improve manoeuvrability while a turning radius of about 5.5 metres would make it easier to drive in tight spaces.
Materials and layout are likely to prioritise durability and ease of cleaning – appealing to consumers who frequently use their vehicles for outdoor activities. If Toyota eventually brings the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ to India, it could fill an interesting gap in the brand’s SUV range by offering authentic four-wheel-drive capability in a smaller and more approachable package.
