Launched in July 2018, the Suzuki Jimny has been soldiering on without any major changes for seven years. A facelift still isn’t in the tow but incremental updates are coming soon
According to a report from creative311.com, Suzuki plans to roll out some safety upgrades for the Jimny and Jimny Sierra (global 3-door Jimny) in Japan in August. The company will expand the Suzuki Safety Support suite of active safety features for the mini SUV.
Suzuki is likely to upgrade the 3-door Jimny models to the level of the Jimny Nomade (India-made 5-door Jimny), which it launched in Japan in April. Dual Camera Brake Support (DCBS) is expected to be offered as standard in the upgraded Jimny and Jimny Sierra.
The new Jimny and Jimny Sierra are likely to feature a stereo camera with two lenses that help the vehicle recognise the distance to and shape of objects ahead. Using this stereo camera, DCBS can detect pedestrians, vehicles, and even lane lines on the basis of their size and shape. This collision-mitigating brake system is functional at both city and highway speeds.
DCBS initially shows a warning in the instrument cluster, and if the risk of collision increases, it automatically applies light braking. When the driver applies the brake, the system increases the intensity, and if the collision becomes unavoidable, it applies maximum braking force.
The configurations equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission are likely to be offered with even False Start Prevention Function and Rear False Start Suppression Function as standard. The former limits acceleration when there’s an obstacle ahead and the driver mistakenly applies the accelerator instead of the brake, while the latter avoids the same mistake when reversing the vehicle.
There’s no word on any cosmetic or mechanical changes for the Jimny or the Jimny Sierra. Suzuki offers the Jimny in Japan with the R06A 0.66-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 47 kW (63 hp) and 96 Nm of torque. Customers can choose between a 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-speed automatic transmission, while a part-time 4WD system is standard.
The Jimny Sierra has the same K15B 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine as the Jimny Nomade, producing 75 kW (101 hp) and 130 Nm of torque. Similarly, customers can choose between a 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-speed automatic transmission and a part-time 4WD system is standard.
