Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun do not offer a six-speed manual gearbox with the 1.5L turbo petrol option in India anymore
Volkswagen India has revised the powertrain lineup for its Virtus and Taigun dropping the manual transmission option for models equipped with the larger 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. Due to this change, the higher capacity TSI motor is now offered exclusively with an automatic gearbox across both nameplates in the domestic market.
Until recently, select variants of the Virtus and Taigun allowed buyers to pair the 1.5-litre TSI engine with a six-speed manual transmission. The option has now been phased out from the official lineup. As a result, customers who specifically prefer a clutch pedal will need to look at the smaller 1.0-litre three-pot turbo petrol engine which makes 110 PS and 175 Nm.
It continues to be sold with a six-speed manual gearbox alongside an automatic option. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit remains unchanged mechanically. It develops 150 PS maximum power and 250 Nm of peak torque and continues to be positioned as the more powerful and enthusiast-oriented engine in Volkswagen and Skoda’s local portfolio targetting volumes.

Automatic transmissions have been witnessing steadily rising acceptance in India particularly in higher output petrol cars where buyers increasingly prioritise convenience without compromising on performance. It also allows Volkswagen to clearly differentiate its engine options. It must be noted that the Virtus is currently the best-selling midsize sedan in India.
Considering that the Skoda Kushaq and Slavia also share the MQB A0 IN platform and engine lineups with the Virtus and Taigun, the six-speed manual transmission could also be axed in their respective range utilising the 1.5L turbo petrol mill but no official confirmation has been made yet. But we do know is that Skoda is preparing to bring in facelifted Kushaq soon judging by a teaser.

It will receive cosmetic changes and interior updates while its sibling the Taigun will also get similar enhancements sooner rather than later. VW will bring in the seven-seater Tayron premium SUV via CKD route within the next couple of months and is based on the global Tiguan. It will be equipped with a 2.0L TSI petrol engine.
