To stay prepared for future emission norms, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is developing a wide ranging propulsion plan
Stricter environmental standards expected later this decade are shaping the direction of Volkswagen Group in one of its key growth markets, India. The forthcoming regulations will gradually require carmakers to lower fleet fuel consumption averages, pushing manufacturers to explore a combination of cleaner combustion systems, electrified drivetrains and alternative fuels to remain compliant.
To stay prepared, the automaker’s local arm, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, is developing a wide ranging propulsion plan instead of committing to a single technology. Recent business performance indicates that its localisation-based plan is already gaining attention. It is worth noting that the company recorded its best yearly domestic volume recently.
It surpassed one lakh units with a huge year-on-year growth. Export shipments pushed the overall tally even higher – helped substantially by demand for the Skoda Kylaq and other locally built models. Product activity will remain intense through the year with a large share of launches led by Skoda Auto as the production of the refreshed Kushaq has commenced ahead of deliveries next month.

Meanwhile, enthusiast-focused offerings including the Skoda Kodiaq RS and Skoda Octavia RS are planned to consolidate the brand’s lineup further along with Kylaq Sportline. In addition, a CNG variant of the Kylaq could also arrive in the near future. Besides its core marque Volkswagen, the group sells vehicles from premium and luxury divisions such as Audi, Bentley and Porsche – enabling wider market coverage.
In contrary to depending solely on electric vehicles, the company is also evaluating other solutions including CNG and flex-fuel technology. The diversified pathway is considered important because charging infrastructure expansion has been gradual and battery-electric penetration remains relatively small compared with total PV sales.

Managing director Piyush Arora has indicated that precise timelines for product introductions with these alternative technologies will depend on future policy details such as trade agreements, tariffs and localisation requirements. As for VW, the locally-made Tayron’s price was announced recently while the facelifted Taigun and Virtus are also in the pipeline.
