X (Twitter at the time) launched encrypted DMs in mid-2023 – now the company is enhancing this functionality and launching it as a full-blown chat application.
The app is simply called “Chat” and sells itself on privacy – it promises end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for chats and file sharing, disappearing messages, a feature that blocks screenshots and more. You can edit and delete sent messages. X promises “No ads. No tracking. Total privacy.”

This is a fully-featured messenger with support for voice and video calls. A voice memo feature is in the works too, allowing users to send pre-recorded voice messages.
The protection isn’t perfect, though – the About Encrypted Direct Messages help page notes: “Currently, we do not offer protections against man-in-the-middle attacks. As a result, if someone—a malicious insider or X itself as a result of a compulsory legal process—were to compromise an encrypted conversation, neither the sender or receiver would know.”
This is a significant issue for E2EE apps. X claims that it is working on a new mechanism with which “man-in-the-middle attacks should be difficult, if not impossible.” Also, “both senders and recipients should be alerted in the event of an attack.”

The Chat app is now available for iOS and through the web browser. An Android app is coming soon.
